How Do I Find a Reputable Book Design Service for My Self-Published Book?
by Tamara Dever, founder, TLC Book Design
Finding the right book design service is about more than creating a beautiful book—it's about finding a trusted publishing partner.
If you're self-publishing a book, you've probably already discovered there are hundreds of companies and freelancers offering book design services. Prices range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, making it difficult to know what's worth the investment.
The truth is that not all book design services are created equal.
Look for Book Specialists
Designing a book is very different from designing a brochure, website, or social media graphic. A professional book designer understands typography, printing requirements, trim sizes, cover and interior specifications, production options, and the technical requirements of platforms such as Amazon KDP and IngramSpark.
Be sure you can see examples of completed books, not just cover designs. A beautiful cover means little if the interior is difficult to read or doesn't meet printer specifications. The portfolio should be filled completely or primarily with book designs as opposed to a few books among brochures, logos, media kits, posters, and the like.
Find Out Who Will Actually Be Designing Your Book
Some companies assign projects to whichever designer is available. Others outsource work to a large pool of freelancers. Before hiring anyone, ask who will be working on your book and what experience they have designing books in your genre.
You should know whether you're hiring an individual expert, a dedicated team, or simply submitting a project into a marketplace and hoping for the best.
Be Wary of Choosing on Price Alone
Every author has a budget, but the least expensive option is rarely the best value.
Your book cover is often the first thing potential readers see and the interior layout is often what convinces people to actually buy the book. A poorly designed cover or amateur interior can make an otherwise excellent book appear self-published in the worst sense of the term.
Professional design is an investment in your book's credibility and long-term success.
Make Sure You Retain Control
One of the biggest advantages of true self-publishing is maintaining ownership and control.
Before hiring a book design service, ask:
Will I own my ISBNs?
Will I own my source files?
Will my publishing accounts (KDP, IngramSpark, etc.) be in my name?
Will I receive all royalties directly?
The answers should be yes. And if you’re truly self-publishing, you won’t receive royalties from the design company, but directly from your KDP and IngramSpark accounts, if you use those services.
Look for Guidance, Not Just Design
Many first-time authors need help with more than a cover and interior layout. Categories, keywords, printing options, metadata, pricing, distribution, and launch preparation can all impact a book's success.
A publishing partner that can guide you through the publishing process is invaluable, as opposed to being just a vendor delivering files.
Check Reviews, Testimonials, and Results
Look for evidence that the company has successfully helped other authors. Testimonials, awards, repeat clients, and examples of published books can provide confidence that you're working with professionals.
The Best Book Design Service is One That Fits Your Goals
Some authors simply need design files. Others want coaching, publishing guidance, and a long-term relationship with someone who can answer questions throughout the process.
The best choice is a service that aligns with your goals, budget, and publishing experience.
